Maldon and Tiptree boss Spillane is relishing underdog tag

MALDON and Tiptree boss Terry Spillane admits his side are “massive underdogs” in Saturday’s FA Trophy tie against Maidstone United.
But he says he and his players will relish that tag, as they battle to make progress into the second qualifying round.
Maidstone, flying high at the top of the Ryman League premier division, are a former Football League side who attract home crowds in excess of 2,000.
They are set to bring a large travelling support and Spillane says the tie will be one to savour at Park Drive.
“If you can’t enjoy an occasion like this, you’re in the wrong sport,” he said.
“We’ll have our work cut out and this is the first game for a long time that we’ve started as massive underdogs.
“Maidstone are a huge non-league club and it’s not often you get to play a side with such pedigree and history.
“But I know my players will step up to the plate and give their all.
“I know from experience that these days don’t come around too often.
“We’ve got nothing to lose, so I’ll be telling them to relax and enjoy it.”
