Journey into the unknown for Heybridge Swifts
3:07pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in Local Sport
IT will be a journey into the unknown for Heybridge Swifts this weekend.
They travel to Cheshunt for a Ryman League division one north encounter on the back of a 3-0 win in the FA Cup preliminary round against Essex Senior League side Basildon United.
Cheshunt have been struggling in the early part of the season, only gaining four points from their opening six games, and this led to the departure of manager Tony Faulkener last week by mutual consent.
Player/assistant manager Omer Riza, who only recenlty joined the club, was appointed as caretaker manager ahead of their FA Cup game at Spartan South Midlands League premier division Hertford Town last week.
However, the former Arsenal player was unable to stop the rot as they lost 4-2.
Swifts manager Mark Hawkes wants his side to maintain their concentration ahead of the encounter so that they maintain their unbeaten start to the league season.
Hawkes said: “Cheshunt is never an easy place to go.
“But we don’t know what to expect now what with their manager departing and a caretaker in charge.
“We won’t know if they will have any new players there by Saturday.
“You don’t know if they will be able to attract new players if they think they are going to play for a caretaker manager who may not be there in two weeks.
“But Riza will want to impress to try and stake a claim for the job and their players may well raise their games to try and figure in his plans.
“However, they have had a tough start to the season and did lose against lower league opposition again last Saturday so there is clearly something wrong there.
“If they can keep that going for another week that’s all well and good for us.
“But it is down to our players to maintain their concentration and keep putting in strong performances.
“It’s all about how we approach the game and our workrate if we want to get the win.”
