Maldon and Tiptree are on the verge of a major new signing

MALDON and Tiptree are on the verge of announcing a “major” new signing.

Boss Terry Spillane was hoping to tie up a deal with the former Football League striker before the weekend.

“It’s going to be a major signing, to give us a boost for the final weeks of the season,” said the Maldon manager.

“I’m 99.9 per cent certain it’ll happen and we’ll be able to announce it by the end of the week.

“It’s just a question of completing the paperwork.

“The player is very well known on the local non-league circuit and used to play in the Football League.

“It’s the kind of signing that will make people sit up and take notice.

“He hasn’t been at a club more recently.

“He’s had a bit of time out but he’s worked hard to get himself fit.

“If it goes through as I expect, I’m sure he’ll be a great addition to our squad.”

Maldon now have a three-point lead in Ryman League division one north as second-placed Grays Athletic beat Tilbury 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Grays still have three games in hand on the men from Park Drive.

Maldon are away at Brentwood Town on Saturday.
