BURNHAM Ramblers’ players are set to be put through their paces by former Premier League star Dean Ashton.

The England international is a guest at Leslie Field for the club’s encounter with Sporting Bengal United.

He and former West Ham physiotherapist John Green will take the warm-up prior to the Essex Senior League contest.

Green is good friends with Ramblers physiotherapist Steve Patient and also knows the club’s assistant boss – Steve’s dad – Dave.

“Dean and John have agreed to come along and it’s a real fillip for our club,” said Burnham boss Keith Wilson.

“Hopefully it’ll put a few people on the gate, especially as West Ham are playing away at Sunderland.

“I’m going to ask them both to take the warm-up before the game.

“There doesn’t seem any point in inviting them along and not utilising their skills and knowledge.

“It’ll also be good for me, to watch and learn and I’m sure the boys will enjoy trying to catch the eye and impress people of their calibre.”

Striker Ashton made more than 240 appearances for the likes of Crewe Alexandra, Norwich City and West Ham.

He also won a cap for England, in an international against Trinidad and Tobago in 2008.

Meanwhile, Burnham played their first game of 2013 on Saturday, securing a 1-0 victory at Stansted.

It means they are unbeaten in nine matches and have a six-point lead at the top of the table.
