Colchester United head coach John McGreal says he is pleased with the start his side have made to the new League Two season after they beat Port Vale 2-0 this afternoon.

Goals from Courtney Senior and Ryan Jackson helped them see off the Valiants and win their first game at the JobServe Community Stadium, following up a good draw at Notts County.

McGreal said: “It’s a good start to the season for us.

“We feel as though we’ve had a good pre-season but it is only a start.

“This division can cause one or two upsets every week and we know it’s going to be a tough league.

“We’ve just got to try and look after ourselves and win games of football and see where that takes us.

“I thought that it was a terrific performance and it’s a good start for us.

“We made a couple of changes and we have our squad in a good place, knowing that if players need to come in and we change shape we can adapt to that and I thought we did that."

McGreal had special praise for winger Senior, who scored Colchester's opening goal on his recall to the team and gave the Vale defence problems throughout.

“Courtney is an unbelievable talent and I thought he was terrific for his goal," added McGreal.

“I wanted to go a bit different at Notts County as I’d already said on the record.

“When he gets going, it’s very difficult for defenders to catch him because he’s got that terrific turn of pace.

“At times, Courtney needs a rest but there’s no denying his quality or his temperament and you can see him improving and maturing every game.

“He knows now that as good as he is going forward, he’s now learning his role out of possession as well.”
