PLAYGOLF Colchester Golf Club Junior Jack Moutell competed in the European Junior Open at the Alcaidesa Links, in Spain.

He had qualified for this prestigious event at the regional competition staged earlier in the year, at Clacton GC.

Before the competition got underway, the youngster played a practice round on the Alcaidesa links course, using it to learn what he could and showed his strength of character to finish strongly.

Moutell set his standards high and with his practice round experience under his belt, he was up before the sun, practicing out on the range before the first-round proper.

This strong work ethic saw him beat his practice round, shooting 81, determined to improve.

Round two saw further progress with some great strokes and his solid scrambling skills seeing him shoot 79.

With a good final round, Moutell was in position to make the cut after rounds one and two.

However, torrential rain set in on day three, meaning the final qualifying round was cancelled as a washout and he narrowly missed the cut.

Moutell competed alongside his caddy for the event, Playgolf club captain, Rob Cornish.

The Alcaidesa Links course is the older of the resort’s two championship courses, with stunning views over The Rock of Gibraltar.

A good-sized field competed in Playgolf senior’s annual AGM and spirits day stableford competition.

John Edgell (20) beat Alan Burke (18) on countback to win the 14-hole competition, after both players carded 33 points.

Third place went to Brian Banks (17) with a good 14-hole score of 30 points, one ahead of fourth-placed Cliff Sturley (28) on 29 points.

The popular competition saw the first ten players earn a bottle of spirits each with the remainder of the field given a bottle of wine in recognition of their support throughout the year.

The AGM saw the 2017 captain, Michael Johnson, hand over to his vice-captain, Stephen Dale, for his 2018 tenure as senior captain.

Stephen Peeling was voted in as his vice-captain.
