HEYBRIDGE Swifts will have an active interest in the FA Cup first round proper draw for the first time in 15 years.

It has been an incredible run of success to start the season by Jody Brown’s team in both cup and league competitions and they have kept it going with a fourth qualifying round win against Haringey Borough.

Swifts’ 4-2 victory against a side who play in the same league as themselves has opened up the possibility of a first round tie against the likes of former FA Cup winners Coventry City, Portsmouth or Wigan Athletic or a mouth-watering Essex derby against Colchester United or Southend United.

Whoever Monday’s draw pitches them against, though, it has been a tremendous run for Swifts that has already earned them almost £30,000 in prize money.

The latest success came against a side who they had been scheduled to be hosting in the Bostik League division north if both had already made cup exits.

Both are riding high in the league and it was all set to be a tight game, but it was the visitors who were smiling at the end.

Heybridge took the lead in the 14th minute when the ball ended up in his own net off Haringey’s Lawrence Yiga and it was an advantage that Brown’s team held to the break.

They found themselves pegged back in the opening stages of the second half as Ralston Gabriel grabbed an equaliser in the 57th minute.

However, parity lasted just eight minutes as Sam Bantick fired them back into the lead and they doubled the advantage in the 69th minute when Luke Callander fired home from the penalty spot.

The tie was made safe four minutes later when Callander found the target again as Swifts opened a 4-1 lead and although Ruaridh Kay scored late on for the hosts there was no way back for them.

It was Heybridge who were left celebrating and eagerly anticipating Monday’s televised first round draw at 7pm.
