KATY Yates was a classy winner of Clacton Golf Club’s Ladies’ Championship.

The 14-year-old won in style, with a score of 156 for her two rounds, when the prestigious 36-hole scratch event was played last Tuesday.

Yates started the day with an 11 handicap.

However, her reward for winning was her name in gold leaf and a handicap cut to eight.

In second place, and the winner of the silver division, with a score of 182, was Denise Pink.

In third, with a score of 190, was Fiona Cope.

The bronze division winner was Jackie Bright, with 210, and in second was Kath Sinnott, with 217.

The handicap winner was Brenda Lord, with a nett 175.

Meanwhile, Clacton’s men played for the Victory Cup and the winner was Bradley Broughton, who returned an excellent score of 78-12-66 and a handicap reduction to 11.

In second was Riley Faulkner, with 76-8-68, on countback from Stuart Fisher, with 81-13-68.

Clacton’s juniors section played for the Pat Green Trophy and the winner was Josh Bethell, with 37 points.

In second was Wilf Elliott, with 34, and in third was Yates, with 31.

Clacton’s ladies’ section played for the June stableford competition and the winner was Shirley Whiston, with 28 points.

In second was Barbara Mahoney, with 27, on countback from third-placed Pam Richmond, also with 27.

Clacton held a nine-hole handicap qualifying competition, played on the back nine holes.

The competition was won by Don Rudge, with 12 points.

In second was Trevor Trill, with 11, and in third was Peter Needham, also with 11.

Clacton’s seniors’ vice-captain Tony Burnside welcomed the club’s friends from Harwich and Dovercourt Golf Club.

Harwich had won 5-3 on their home course back in March.

Clacton’s team was Burnside, Peter Wiggins, Robert Gillespie, Geoff Manning, Laurie Farrugia, Nigel Martin, John Willson, Rick Hale, John Crick, Ray Fage, John Fisher, John Kemp, Bill Clarke, Doug Nichols and Derek Woodrow.

They managed three wins and four halved matches.

Harwich seniors’ captain Ray Pryce announced that Clacton had won 5-3. That meant this year’s contest ended as a draw.

Clacton’s seniors’ section played their June Medal and the winner was Steve Dow, with 81-8-73.

In second was David Aylott, with 100-25-75, in third was John Holt, with 88-13-75, and in fourth was Burnside, with 91-14-77.

Clacton seniors captain Joe Middleton and his team of Burnside, Farrugia, Brian Viercant, Norman Messenger, Manning, Bob Seggie, Ray Crossfield, Fage, Clarke, Willson, Wiggins, Crick, Fisher, John Nicholson and Woodrow took part in the return match against Colne Valley.

Clacton had won the first match 8-0 but, on this occasion, they lost 5-3.
