IN another busy week for members of Maldon Golf Club there have been more victories.

In their first league match of the campaign, the Jubilee Cup team played at home to Rayleigh.

The competition for category three and four handicappers pits six golfers per side in singles scratch match play, and another six golfers in handicap betterball pairs match play.

Maldon’s team played really well and won 5½-3½.

They now look forward to their second of four league matches, this time against Gosfield Lake in early May.

This week’s Sunday competition for full members was the ECAGU Centenary salver.

This trophy was presented to Maldon Golf Club in 1991 by the Essex County Amateur Golf Union to mark Maldon’s Centenary year.

First place this year went to new member Steve Lawrence, with a nett 70.

The next three places were decided on countback with all players returning nett 71.

Alan Dunsdon was second, followed by Stuart Skriabin in third and Andy West fourth.

Fifth place on nett 72 went to Richard Nash on countback.

The nearest the pin prize on the par three fifth/14th hole went to head greenkeeper Tom Bownes.

On Friday, Maldon’s men hosted Channels in a reinstated friendly match.

Current club captain Jim Culleton is an ex-Channels member so it seemed an appropriate time to resurrect this old fixture.

Eight pairs per side competed in a betterball, matchplay contest in the Hambro format with Maldon running out winners by 6½-1½ and taking a nine-up Hambro aggregate lead into the return fixture at Channels later in the year.

The busy week also saw Maldon’s seniors playing host to Clacton seniors in a friendly match on April 15.

Maldon won the contest by 6½-1½.
