ALI Carter believes he proved he is a genuine title contender after cruising into the second round of the Snooker World Championship in Sheffield.

Carter, from Tiptree, making his first Crucible Theatre appearance since being given the all-clear from lung cancer last year, made light work of veteran Alan McManus to triumph 10-5 in their first-round clash.

Leading 6-3 overnight, Colchester-born Carter made a quick start to the final session, posting two half-centuries to clinch the opener.

Although McManus offered some resistance in contributions of 33 and 42, runs of 69 and 76 ultimately ensured it was the Englishman who booked a second-round encounter with 2010 world champion Neil Robertson which begins on Saturday afternoon.

Carter is a two-time finalist at the Crucible himself and claims there is still plenty more in the tank to take out Robertson.

“I didn’t actually feel like I played that well out there against Alan but I competed in all departments and there is plenty left in the tank,” he explained.

“On paper it was a tough draw but I won quite convincingly and I’m pleased with how I held myself together.

“I’m here to do a job and win this tournament. I’ve got good memories here, I’ve made two finals and the only thing I’ve got left to do is win it.”

Carter lost both his final appearances to five-time winner Ronnie O’Sullivan – in 2008 and 2012 – but is adamant he can go one better this year.

He believes the longer format of the World Championship is tailor-made for his game.

“All the other tournaments aren’t in the same ballpark as the World Championship. The Worlds is totally unique on its own,” added Carter.

“That’s why Ronnie (O’Sullivan) was able to not play all year, then come to the Crucible and win it.”
