Hawkes wants a positive Heybridge Swifts performance

HEYBRIDGE Swifts boss Mark Hawkes wants his side to channel their frustrations into Saturday’s FA Trophy showdown at Carshalton Athletic.

The Scraley Road side were left cursing their luck after hotly-contested refereeing decisions went against them in last week’s FA Cup defeat at Hayes and Yeading.

Hawkes’ men produced a battling performance but lost 3-2, in the second round qualifying tie at the Kingfield Stadium.

However, rather than feeling sorry for themselves, Hawkes wants his side to respond with a positive performance in their first qualifying round tie at managerless Carshalton.

“Our performance last weekend was absolutely excellent and now we need to produce the same again,” said Hawkes.

“Hayes play two levels higher than us and if we can put them on the back foot, we can put anyone on the back foot.

“We were the better side in the second half and pinned them back.

“When you play a side from two levels above, you expect your goalkeeper and defenders to be the busy ones.

“But theirs were the ones being tested and that tells you everything.

“We were very unlucky to lose but we’ve got to take the positives.

“If we show the same levels of work-rate and application, I’m certain we can get a positive result and make Trophy progress on Saturday.”

Kudus Oyenuga’s first-half brace put Heybridge on the back foot on Sunday.

Ben Newson halved the deficit but the hosts scored again, before Michael Cheek netted Swifts’ second in the 92nd minute.
