U's hit six in opening pre-season friendly

Colchester United got their pre-season off to a convincing start with a comfortable 6-0 win over non-league outfit Heybridge Swifts.

Ian Henderson and Freddie Sears both scored twice in a one-sided first half, where the U's were dominant at Scraley Road.

Colchester boss John Ward made wholesale changes at half-time and a new U's XI took to the field for the second half.

Substitute Tosin Olufemi scored twice in the second half, as Colchester claimed a comfortable victory.

Trialists Merrick James-Lewis and Jackson Ramm both featured for Colchester.

We must sign trialist Jackson Ramm. Fast, skilful, still only 19, yet 38 appearances for Blackburn in Premier League Reserve Division and an England U18 cap. He was superb today (as was Freddie Sears).

Have rarely seen anybody pull down and control a chest high ball at speed as well as Ramm repeatedly did. Offers the width we need? How on earth is he on trial here? Looked a class above.

Intresting Noah, didn't go to the game and must admit abit suprised to see two trilist and not one a striker, but if he is that good then why not, did read before Blackburn signed him he had trials at man u and Cambridge def thought very highly of him

First half, we sorta played a 4-6-0 (Spanish type) line up. Frankly, I couldn't work out who was leading the line, but we scored 4 in 30 minutes. It was like having a mass midfield going forward as necessary. Sears regularly fetched the ball from deep (Rooney style) and tormented the defence. Yet scored twice. I think Spain might have shown us a productive new way.

Glad to see every one is remaining positive. Till the league programe gets fully underway, will I judge if improvements have been made. We still need that someone with a bit of height up front, which hopefully will be before the season starts. Someone suggested last week Sears and Henderson leading up front, which would then really strugle against any teams with big centre backs. I dont expect us to be in the top six but if I see some of the younger players established in the team this season, that will be very encouraging.

Haha living the spain and rooney comparisons, there's me thinking we were going to struggle in the league, now its bring on Europe!
Would like to see an older established striker, maybe even one that was past his best just for the experience, think defensively were ok, midfield very strong ESP with JJ coming back and bean.
