TIPTREE’S Dale Whitnell got his bid for a PGA European Tour card going with a top 40 finish in a PGA Challenge Tour event in Austria.

The 22-year-old Five Lakes Golf Club member has said he is targeting a high placing on the Challenge Tour at the end of this year to win a place on the main European stage in 2012.

And having had a slow start to the year, Whitnell made an impact at his second Challenge Tour outing at the Kärnten Golf Open at the Klagenfurt-Seltenheim Club in Klagenfurt, Austria.

Whitnell opened with a one-under par 71, before moving up the leaderboard with a 67 and bouncing back from a disappointing third round of 74 with a 69 on the final day.

That gave him a seven-under total for the tournament and a share of 37th spot and a 960 Euro payout.

Whitnell will be hoping to progress his Challenge Tour credentials this week as he heads to Brittany in France for the next event, the ALLIANZ Open Cotes d’Armor at the Golf Blue Green de Pléneuf Val André.

The tournament was due to begin today.
