A much-changed Maldon ran into a tough Exning team at Ipswich.
Maldon began well in this Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one match, with Reece O’Connell (25) fierce on any loose bowling and Martyn Coker (78) solid as a partner.
However, Easltear (three for 69) got Reece and Ian Elliott quickly.
Thereafter Maldon’s innings became Coker’s search for a partner.
Jimmy Ainscough (20) and Jake Collins (20) stayed with him for a while, but when Martyn was seventh out at 180 the innings had little left and Maldon finished their 50 overs on 203 for eight.
Maldon’s third skipper of the season, Elliott, said that this was going to be a difficult total to defend against a side with a batting strength of Exning and with a bowling attack missing key openers.
It all began well for Maldon. O’Connell broke the opening stand with only three on the board, but the next wicket fell at 59 and the third (to Toby Pugh) at 142 and that was that.
Exning won by seven wickets.
