DALE Whitnell’s second PGA European Tour trip to South Africa failed to live up to the heady heights of his first.

The golfer from Tiptree made an early exit from the Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club after missing the halfway cut with a five-over score following the first two rounds.

Having enjoyed a joint fourth place finish at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Country Club in Malelane, South Africa, in his previous PGA European Tour outing in December, there was to be no such delight for the 21-year-old Five Lakes Golf Club member this time.

Things started well at the Joburg Open as he opened with a round of level par 71 on the East Course at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington, but a score of 76 around the West Course left him seven shots off the pace to feature in the final two days of competition.

South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel won the overall event, with a final score of 23 under par.
