Scrum on down to the beach

SIXTY members of Burnham On Crouch Rugby Club travelled to Clacton to participate in the O2 Scrum on the Beach Tag rugby tournament.

The event was the first of eight being held at various venues around the country over the next few weeks.

They are part of the RFU’s Play On campaign which is sponsored by O2, the purpose of which is to raise awareness of rugby union around the country and to keep young people involved in the game throughout the close season.

Burnham entered three teams, each were made up of senior men, ladies, youth and mini/midis, Puds Posse, Warwick’s Warriors and Dengie Saracens.

The latter lost in the semi- final of the vase.

The squad consisted of Rob, Teresa and Alfie Barr, Kevin Manning, Faye and Joe Groom, Jack and George Marron, Oz, and Henry Boyce.

Pud’s Posse, consisting of Sam Powell, Kelly Nicholls, Terry Stiffell, Tom Morris, Joe Tavinor, Neil Wade, Matt Bray, Tyler Martin, Alex Bell and Liam Blackie came up against some tough opposition while Warwick’s Warriors won the Spoon.

The winning squad, Steve, Sian and David Bevan, Victoria and Alex Melhuish, Ben Mumford, Rhiannon Mahoney, Liam Williams, Tom Connolly and Alex Lightfoot were presented with the spoon on stage at the beach.

Earlier in the day the event had been visited by Paul Sackey of London Wasps and England.

Everyone had chance to get autographs and challenge Sackey to a game of Batak.

It was a great day out and is sure to become an annual event for the club who are hoping to take even more people next year.
