FOLLOWING from their success in the previous two rounds Five Lakes have now put themselves in a strong position to progress to the next round of this year’s Curry Cup.

Playing Gosfield Lakes, at Five Lakes, they gave some resolute performances.

The morning foursomes proved to be Five Lakes strength yet again with Matt Foot and David Milne kicking off with a 3&2 victory over Jason Cloughly and Michael Ball, followed by Malcolm Pitt and John Lewins, won even more convincingly 4&3.

The away side pulled a match back with a 4&3 victory over Paul Bowers and Matt Sommerville.

Five Lakes established their lead with Clive Taylor and Andy Dobson claiming victory over Dave Gallagher and Gary Jones.

Gosfield had brought several juniors to add to their team including 19 handicapper Elliott Johnson teamed with a more experienced Michael Shackell and they managed a one-up win over Five Lakes Nigel Popper and Mick Gill.

The final pairing of Simon Boon and Dave Chignell finished off a good start for Five Lakes by winning their match 3&2, giving Five Lakes a four games to two lead.

Two good early victories for Matt Foot, 3&2, and John Lewins, 6&4, started Five Lakes off on in the right track in the afternoon singles.

Gosfield pulled one back with Jason Cloughly winning his match, but with Matt Sommerville one-up and Paul Bowers 2&1, Five Lakes quickly restored the advantage. Malcolm Pook took a half from his match with Dave Gaught.

Elliott Johnson, Gosfield’s junior player, further enhanced his reputation with a convincing 4&3 victory over Dave Chignell.

Clive Taylor managed an equitable half against Dave Gallagher.

Gary Jones showed Gosfield’s fighting spirit winning his match 5&3.

However, convincing wins by Nigel Popper, 2&1, and Simon Boon, 5&4, gave the home team a convincing 12-6 victory in their third round match.
