Five Lakes Golf Club captain Chris Southgate recently held his Captain’s charity day, which involved team and individual competitions on the day.

Many Five Lakes members and local businesses supported the event by sponsoring holes and participating in the raffle and auction after the golf tournament, enjoying a specially laid-on hog-roast — and raising more than £3,000 for the captain’s nominated charities, the Williams Syndrome Doundation and the Wooden Spoon.

More than 120 golfers competed in this Stableford event, the team prizes being decided after a very competitive scoring game. Third place went to Darren Butcher, Ron Crane, Rob Taylor and Steve Gordon with 121 points and second to Mark Sherriff, Peter Young, David Milne and Terry Rutter with 123 points.

However the winners of the team prize were Don and Matt Leech, Ian Mortlock and Paul Hartbrom, with a creditable 125 points.

The individual prizes were also very competitive. In fourth place was Ann Martin with 39 points, just beaten by Sally Code with 40 points. Sally herslf was beaten on countback for second place by Matt Leech.

The winner was Five Lakes member Mark Sherriff, with an outstanding 44 points. The longest drive competition was also won by Mark Sherriff for the men and Sally Code for the ladies. Nearest the pin was won by John Meakes for the men and lady captain Carole Lewis for the women.

The Butler Cup Mixed Stableford greensomes provided another enjoyable competition for both men and lady golfers of Five Lakes. On 38 points were Nigel Popper and Lyn Fern, followed closely by husband-and-wife team Ron and Julie Dent, with 39 points.

Ron and Julie were beaten on countback for third place by John White and Dot Greaves, also on 39 points, who were in turn denied second by Eric Lewis and Roma Raymond. This year’s holders of the Butler Cup are Tony Bermingham and Ann Martin, with 40 points.
