Five Lakes Golf Club held its club championship over 36 holes this weekend, using both the links and lakes courses to decide the best scratch and handicap players.

The first round held on the Links par 71 course gave an opportunity for players in the handicap section to show their worth. Notable performances came particularly from Clive Jenner (20) who was in a group of players who scored net 68s including Will Boniface (1), and Derek Monaghan (13).

They were all beaten into second place by Matt Foot (6) with a net 67, but the best score on the links course was Ken Broomfield (18) with a net 65.

This all boded well for the next 18 holes on the championship lakes course, a par 72. With players making moves to get on to the leaderboard, there was a net 71 from Mick Gill (15) and a net 70 from John Eddolls (9), who managed third place.

Both Pat McSweeney (13) and Phil Robson (11) carded net 69s but it was Phil Robson who took the honour on countback.

This made the results for the overall club championship a really tight affair, with the handicap trophy positions decided on countback. Matt Foot and John Eddolls lost out as third place went to Will Boniface with a net 140.

Second place again was resolved on count back, between Clive Jenner taking second and Andy Shakespear (0) winning with a better back nine.

The scratch and main trophy to decide the best golfer at Five Lakes did have some form guidance - taking third place was one-handicapper Will Boniface with a gross 141 and second place went to scratch golfer Andy Shakespear.

But with inevitable regularity, Five Lakes club champion is England's number-one amateur, Dale Whitnell, playing of plus-four, who shot a gross 137.
