HEYBRIDGE SWIFTS boss Jody Brown hopes his side can continue their Essex Senior Cup adventure with a victory against Basildon United tonight.

The sides are set to meet in a quarter-final showdown at Scraley Road (kick-off 7.45pm).

Swifts made it all the way to the final of last year's competition, before being pipped 1-0 by National League South side Concord Rangers.

Their form in the competition has continued this term, with victories against Halstead Town and Dagenham and Redbridge.

Now they hope to extend their stay in it with another success tonight.

“It’s a great competition and one we’d love to stay in," said Brown.

“We’ve got great memories of our run last year and we’re certainly not taking this match lightly.

“It’s a big one for us - an important match for us and a chance to continue our progression."

Swifts head into the match in decent form, having only lost one of their last four matches.

Even that one defeat was again title-contenders Brightlingsea Regent.

They beat leaders Maldon and Tiptree on Boxing Day, claimed an important victory at Brentwood Town and also grabbed a point against Aveley on Saturday.

“The performance which will probably go a bit unnoticed was our display against Brightlingsea,” added Brown.

“They’re undoubtedly one of the best sides in the league and yet we pushed them all the way.

“We know we’re not a bottom-three side and our position could be so different, had tight games gone our way.

“Our record against the top five is as good as anyone’s.”

Another quarter-final is taking place tonight, with Billericay Town facing Tilbury.

East Thurrock United have already eliminated Colchester United 2-0, while Chelmsford City and Braintree Town are set to meet on Monday.
