SOUTHMINSTER Tennis Club have had a successful season.

Of their five teams in the Chelmsford and District League - two mixed teams, two men’s teams and a ladies' team - three of them won their divisions.

Liz Windle’s mixed team won with 53 points, beating second-placed South Hanningfield by 8½ points.

Diane Caulkett’s ladies' team won their division by a narrow margin of just two points, beating Marconi three into second place.

The men’s team captained by Brett Allan were unbeaten in their division and clear winners by 20½ points.

All three teams will gain promotion.

For a small club, this was an exceptional feat and the teams look forward to the challenges of next year’s matches in the higher divisions.

The mixed two team and the men’s second team were not so successful but enthusiasm remains high and they will compete next year, as will a second ladies' team.

Playing in their first year, the senior ladies came fifth in their league but they were up against strong opposition including some county players.

With the team having regular coaching from club coach Gareth Jones, they hope to improve on their position next year.

Last Sunday saw the second of the Winter Series competitions and, on a cold and breezy day, 13 members enjoyed a morning of good, competitive tennis.

For the second month running, Bernie Wiedenauer won for the ladies, with Diane Caulkett in second place.

The men’s winner was Brett Allan, with Aidan Monk second.
