FORTY-EIGHT men competed for the September stableford at Burnham Golf Club.

It was another lovely day, with lots of run on the ball but the greens needed special thought.

However, the scores were still very good.

In division one, Chris Roberts was first, with 39 points, and Nicholas Taylor second, on countback, with 38.

Mickey Leonard was third, Graham Bowers fourth, Kevin Shanks fifth and Seamus McGee sixth.

In division two, Fenton Yeulett was first, with 41 points.

Simon Orrin was second, with 39, and Matthew Duck third, with 38.

Burnham's cadets were also out playing for the Farmers Goblet.

Richard Smith was first, with 36 points, and Rachel Clark second, with 31.

Meanwhile, nine mixed pairs played in the annual friendly match at Channels.

Unfortunately, the home course advantage prevailed and only Denise and Gordon Howat and Claire and Keith Lewis were able to secure wins.

The seniors were in action against Colchester, who were smarting from their 8-0 drubbing at Burnham earlier this year and determined to reverse the result.

They almost did that, but a win by David Frost and Gordon Relph meant Colchester's win was 7-1 rather than the desired whitewash.

Thirty ladies played on Thursday but with course maintenance week, the competition scheduled was postponed as there were too many temporary greens.

The greens have had heavy work and will play all the better through the winter months.

Sue Frost was first, with 43 points, Liz Tolhurst second, with 39, and Linda Stevens third, with 38.

This Monday the seniors played the Mick McMahon Greensomes.

The runner-up in his own competition was Mick McMahon and David Frost, with 42 points.

The winners with 43 points were Bob Hyde and Joe Elgie.
