MICK Kempen and Steve Gearey combined superbly in Maldon Golf Club's Secretary's Cup.

They returned a fantastic, ten-under-par score of nett 61 in the betterball medal competition to win by two clear shots from father and son pairing of Dave and Rob Poynton on nett 63.

The minor places from third to fifth went Martin and Marley Read, Jim Scott and his partner Dave Porter, and to Trevor Hayhoe with Ben Griffiths.

Mark Hinton won the nearest-the-pin prize on the par three fifth/14th hole while Ian Ladkin took the prize for the closest second shot on the par four sixth/15th.

Earlier in the week, Maldon's seniors played at home to Braintree Seniors in another of their popular friendly matches.

The visitors were successful by five matches to three.

Both teams enjoyed a course in super condition and the match was followed by a fine lunch in the clubhouse

Maldon ladies have recently competed for two more of their club competitions.

In the Centenary Trophy, Sharon Hunter was this year's winner with 29 points.

Jean Roberts was second with 27 points and Mary Clark third with 25.

In the Kemp Cup, another stableford event, Margaret Caviel led the field to take victory with 25 points from Sharon Hunter in second and Jane Henderson in third.
