BOTH the men's and ladies' sections have busy with competition action at Maldon Golf Club.

The Krohn Cup, played as a bogey competition, has been contested by full members since 1912 when the trophy was first presented to the club by Alderman HA Krohn JP DL, who went on to become Mayor of Maldon in 1914.

This year's winner was past captain Alan Dunsdon with a score of +3.

Second place went to Malcolm Burnett on +2 with Ben Griffiths third on +1.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Mick Kempen and Paul Jackson.

The annual Captain versus Vice-Captain match pitted two teams of 15 players representing Terry Butcher and Paul Holland respectively.

The match comprised seven betterball match play games while the team captains competed head-to-head in a singles match.

This year's result went in favour of club captain Terry Butcher by 4½-3½.

The July monthly stableford was won by Mick Kempen with 38 points, with Dan Gardner second on 37, Jordan Crozier third with 34 (ocb) and Christos Ryan fourth.

The Centenary Trophy medal competitions saw members competing for the magnificent silver bowl presented by past-captain Peter Holmes to commemorate the club's 100th birthday in 1991.

The winner this year was Gardner with a fine score of net 66.

Second place went to the in-form Kempen with net 69 (ocb) while 15-handicapper Peter Harper was placed third with the same score, having returned a gross 84.

They also contested the Doe Cup - a foursomes competition - and this was won by the pairing of Margaret Churcher and Margaret Caviel.

Second place went to Kate Stevenson and Valerie Rayner, while Mary King and Jane Henderson finished third.

Maldon's seniors played two more of their regular friendly matches, with away ties against Colne Valley and Braintree. Both matches went the way of the host clubs by some margin but were nevertheless played in the usual friendly spirit.
