MALDON Golf Club staged their inaugural 125th Anniversary Waltz.

Past captain Pete Hawkins devised a different way of playing the Maldon course at the event, staged to celebrate the club's milestone anniversary this year.

Teams played six of the nine greens but with alternative teeing grounds, so that none of the holes were played in their usual format.

After three shotgun starts, a total of seventeen teams of three played the loop of six holes three times, thereby creating an 18-hole round.

It was stableford scoring off full handicap in the Waltz format, where only the best individual score counted on the first hole, the two best on the second and all three on the third, creating a waltz-like 1-2-3, 1-2-3 repetition over the 18 holes.

The winning team of Sam Cummins, Dave Purkiss and Alan Buckingham scored a superb 75 points.

Dan Gardiner, Jordan Crozier and Christos Ryan were runners-up after finishing three points behind, while Richard Nash, Paul Nash and Ed Bishop took third place with 71.

The nearest-the-pin prize went to club secretary Viv Locke, whose tee shot on the par three third hole came to rest overhanging the lip of the hole.

Entry fees, along with a memorabilia raffle, added nearly another £100 to the Captain's Charity funds.

The following day, Maldon GC hosted the inaugural Purkiss 6 & 9 Challenge.

A total of 24 drawn pairs took part in the betterball format but with a twist.

On holes six and nine, the stableford scores were aggregated and there were prizes for first, second, sixth and ninth places.

The fine trophies were presented to the club this year by brothers Dave and Chris Purkiss.

The first winners of the pair of superb glass crystal Claret Jugs were Sam Cummins and Bill Shelley, with 49 points. Peter Scanes and Keith Bannister were runners-up, with 45 points.

The prize for sixth place went, appropriately, to Dave Purkiss and Will Gregory, while Tim Hill and Jon Dormon took the spoils for ninth place.

The weekly nearest the pin prizes went to Richard Nash on the par three fifth/14th and to Ian Ladkin for the closest second shot to the par four sixth/15th.

Maldon Ladies played their Summer Pairs competition, with Sue Gardiner and Margaret Churcher victorious.

Mary King and Marjorie Royle were runners-up, while Mary Clark and Margaret Caviel were third.

Maldon's seniors hosted Frinton on Sea in a friendly matches, with the visitors securing a narrow victory.
