THIRTY Five Lakes seniors contested the Seniors Cup, a stableford qualifying competition played on the Links course. After recent heavy rain, the course was just about playable.

However, because of the waterlogged fairways and flooded bunkers, the event had to be reduced to a non-qualifier.

With no run on the ball, the course played its full length, making scoring a premium with only ten of the field returning scores above 30 points.

In spite of the saturated fairways, Five Lakes' groundstaff had worked wonders with the greens, presenting them with slick but reliable perfect putting surfaces.

Under the adverse conditions, 17-handicapper Frank Taylor’s early return of 39 points set a target that was unlikely to be bettered.

And so it proved, although Jim Fern did his best to provide the nearest challenge with a creditable 38 points.

Main results: 1st Frank Taylor 39 points, 2nd Jim Fern 38 points, 3rd Richard Taylor 36 points on countback, 4th Bryan Thompson 36 points, 5th Tony Tyler 34 points, 6th Clive Jenner 32 points ocb

As a result of the competition, Taylor and Fern will represent Five Lakes in the 2016 Essex Seniors Trophy to be held in August.
