MARK Hinton was crowned winner as Maldon Golf Club held a very successful Captain's Day.

Hinton won with 40 points, as a total of 66 members competed in the singles stableford event.

Alan Dunsdon was runner-up with 39 points, ahead of three-handicapper Billy Mason who shot a gross 72 to score 38 points.

Mason was third on countback ahead of new member Ben Griffiths, while Roy Hurren took fifth prize on 37 points.

The prize for the best front nine went to Nigel Cook and the back nine prize was won by Nick Rushen.

There were also two nearest-the-pin prizes, which went to Nick Shakespeare and Tony Davis.

The ladies' winner was club secretary Viv Locke, with 37 points.

Torrential downpours in the days leading up to the event meant a cancellation was on the cards.

However, Maldon's greenkeeping staff performed wonders to clear the greens of the surface water and get the course into playable condition.

The greens iron was used as a squeegee and created a bow-wave to great effect on many of the surfaces as there was so much standing water and the putting surfaces were unbelievably superb all day.

There were morning and afternoon starts to ensure all competitors could be accommodated.

Club captain Terry Butcher provided an array of superb prizes and laid on free food and drinks throughout the day.

He also gave all competitors commemorative 125th anniversary pitchmark repairers/ball markers, marking Maldon GC's 125th year.

Entry fees and the raffle ensured that approximately £400 was raised towards the Captain's Charity for the year.

Maldon GC ladies' annual Guest Day 18-hole betterball competition was blessed with good weather.

Colne Valley GC pair Sue Gardiner and her guest Sue Earnshaw were winners, ahead of runners-up Jane Henderson and Dee Wells from Burnham GC.

Maldon lady captain Mary King and her guest Roma Raymond from Five Lakes GC were third.

Maldon's Seniors played their return match at Channels Golf Club in awful weather conditions and a few matches went uncompleted.

Channels won the tie by a margin of four matches but Maldon were victorious 8.5-7.5 over the two home-and-away legs.
