FIVE Lakes juniors were out in force on Saturday to compete for the Berry Summer Cup and Shield.

The event is played in two divisions with handicaps 0-18 and 19-45 respectively.

Ben Jewell (13) won the Summer Cup with 39 points from Tom Arrowsmith (8).

Louis Twitchett (20) collected the Shield with 40 points, with Rhys Baldock (21) coming second with 39, both being rewarded with handicap cuts.

Five Lakes Juniors thanked sponsors Ron and Marie Berry for their generosity and continuing support of the Junior section.

As the Juniors were battling for their trophies on the Links course, the Fourreleet Cup was being played for on the Lakes course.

The mixed foursomes competition, organised by the ladies’ section, was a close-fought event with Sue Jenner and Frank Taylor taking the spoils with 30 points from Di Arnold and Roger Hyman with 29.

Lady captain Sarah Mann, junior captain Joe Hart and club captain Roger Hyman presented the prizes for both competitions.

The Smugglers Trophy is a qualifying event with the winners and runners-up in the men’s medals and golf club board competitions throughout the year.

Two players returned nett 75, Pat McSweeney (13) and Alan Garnett (10), to be just outside the main prizes.

The final places with nett 74 were sorted on count back.

Third place went to John Mayle (14) with Dave Rogers (5) second with a lower gross score.

The winner of the Smugglers Bowl was Malcom Pook (5), also with a lowest gross score of 38 on his back nine holes.

Five Lakes Seniors played their first round of this season’s Winter League.

The competition attracted nine teams who competed in conditions that were more typical of a mid-summer event.

The format was a three-ball Texas Scramble Stableford, played off 1/7 combined handicaps, with individual points carried over to subsequent rounds.
