MALDON Golf Club hosted the recent Society of Essex Lady Captains’ autumn meeting.

The event was contested as a pairs betterball stableford competition with 64 ladies taking part in pursuit of the Brabdan Trophy.

The winners were June Morgan, of Langdon Hills, and her partner Dawn Marriott, from Forrester Park, with 40 points.

On Friday, club captain Jim Culleton hosted the final major fund-raising event of his captain’s year with an 18-hole charity golf day in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

Teams of four competed in a stableford event where the best three scores on each hole counted towards the team’s total.

The wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of the competitors and a good day was had by all.

In a most fitting end to Jim Culleton’s fund-raising year his own team, which included his two sons Neil and Mark ran out winners by five clear points on 120.

Second place, appropriately, went to Maldon vice-captain Terry Butcher and his team of Alan Syrett, Dave Porter and Essex-based PGA professional Dale Whitnell.

Whitnell fired six birdies and returned an individual score of gross 67 (four-under-par) to help the team amass a score of 115 points.

However, this was only just enough to secure them the runners-up spot on countback from the fourball comprising Maldon members Bob Holland, Paul Holland and Des Bastian along with Colin Ward from The Warren.

The nearest the pin winners included Mark Culleton, Graham Guthrie and Rob Holland.

Initial estimates suggest that over £500 was raised on the day for the Captain’s Charity.

In other recent events, the Ladies’ Generation Cup was won by Jenny Chamberlain, with Val Rayner in second place.

The Ladies’ Medal 11 was won by Sue Gardiner with a nett 76.
