Young Alex Gray has had a pretty good weekend.

After picking up his new car on Saturday he was one of only two teams to win over at Boyce Hill in the return friendly at the South Benfleet club.

While four pairs achieved halves and with two wins this left Burnham 7-4 down on the day.

Burnham’s home result of 7-5 meant an overall loss of 12-11 and therefore Boyce retained the trophy.

Gray then fired 39 points in variable winds on Sunday to take the McKinlay Trophy and get his name up in gold lettering on the boards.

While he has had several successes in the past as a cadet this is his first senior win.

With a good field of 66, ten players were par or less.

Second, third and fourth places were taken by three past captains Tony Simmons, Paul Hegarty and Nic Hull, all on 38 points.

Gray’s next big event is the final of the mixed foursomes summer knockout where he and Viv Locke will play Paul Hegarty and Jo Hammond.

During the week 23 men played in the Midweek medal.

Results: 1 Chris Pask 65, 2 Paul Winn 68, 3 Bob Willett 70 ocb, 4 Ron Nethaway 70.

Having won the away fixture against Maldon in April 4½-3½, the veterans returned the same scoreline at home on last Tuesday, which meant they retained the Anchor Trophy 9-7.

Twenty-one ladies played the September medal.

Results: Silver Division: 1 Hilary Skeens 76, 2 Cally Fearn 77.

Bronze Division: 1 Mel Lewis 77 ocb, 2 Eve Corfield 77.

Cadets played for The Jim Morris Trophy on Saturday.

In first place was Sam Gorringe on 31 points with George Stacey Stevens second on 30.

Rachel Clark was third with 26.

Gorringe had a great 40ft putt on the 16th while Stacey Stevens played a provisional on the seventh for a lost ball and the ball went straight in the hole for a par.
