Ladies’ Captain Elaine Mason was delighted to see her Burnham on Crouch County Silver Trophy team win in the semi-finals on Sunday.

The team of five players with 10 plus handicaps played Stoke by Nayland, who have a very good track record having been in the finals for the last three years.

The match was at the well prepared Crondon Park course on a hot sunny afternoon.

The first two games were neck and neck but lead off Viv Locke sealed the first point on the 17th.

The same was happening behind with very little between them until the 15th when Jean Bailey took the lead and then sealed the match on the 17th.

Burnham had two points in the first two matches.

Sue Frost in the number three slot also had a close game and went one up on the 17th.

The pond was not friendly and Sue had to go up the 19th.

By then Avis Greenaway and Liz Clark were in having fought well but lost.

Frost played the first hole beautifully and won her match and so the team won 3&2.

They are now playing Crondon Park at Chigwell in the final.

It was also an important weekend for the cadet section who were playing the Dennis Hill Trophy over two days of medal golf.

On the Saturday, Rachel Clark came in with a nett 65, followed closely by George Stacey-Stevens with a nett 68.

On the Sunday, Stacey-Stevens, playing one of his last games as a cadet, had a gross 76 and a nett 65 but Clark was close behind with a nett 67.

Clark pipped Stacey-Stevens for the trophy for the second year running and both had substantial handicap reductions.

Richard Smith had a very good card on the Sunday with a nett 69 and had a two shot reduction.

Special prizes on Saturday: nearest pin 11th: Mackenzie Maberley; 15th: Sam Gorringe.

Sunday: nearest the pin: 5th: Ollie Reardon; 11th: George Stacey-Stevens.

Longest drive on both days was won by Stacey-Stevens.

The ladies had week two of the Challenge Trophy.

The weekend ladies had to contend with a round in the rain so a score of 39 points by Amy Barnes was great golf.

On the Thursday, Joyce Leach was second with 37 pts and Helen Ford and Sue Frost had 36.

The overall trophy was a three-way tie between Amy Barnes, Helen Ford and Liz Tolhurst with 71 points but Barnes won on countback from Ford then Tolhurst.

In fourth place was Viv Locke with 70 pts, on countback from Joyce Leach.

The men had a great day over at Channels on Saturday with a total of 60 players in beautiful sunshine and were joined by the Channels president and owner Tony Stubbings for the afternoon.

A curious feature of these matches is the use of the Hambro scoring system – matchplay but played out to the 18th hole.

There were good away wins for the captain and vice-captain Dean Bewers and Dave Watson, Ron Redman/Graham Bowers, David Elphinstone/Nic Hockings, Rob Gray/Alex Gray, Kevin Shanks/Ron Stevens and honourable draws for Graeme Davies/Barry Fitch and Ricky Blake/Kevin Church.

Despite the matches falling 9-6 in Burnham’s favour a few heavy defeats meant they lost on total holes by minus ten.

On a fine Sunday, the men played the August stableford.

It was tight at the top in both divisions.

Results: Division one: 1 Paul Russell 37 pts ocb, 2 Ryan Davies 37 pts, 3 Bob Morris, 4 Chris Roberts.

Division two: 1 Laurie Driscoll 38 pts ocb, 2 Cliff Watt 38pts, 3 Stanley Hawksworth 37 pts, 4 Daniel Munro.
