THIS week saw the final league fixture for the Ladies’ County Bronze Shield competition.

With one defeat it was important for Burnham on Crouch to secure a win in this final game as everyone has lost a game in this league.

With home advantage against Chigwell, a win was possible.

Amazingly it was a clean sweep for the Burnham ladies with a 7-0 victory.

This hopefully means the team have a strong chance of going on to the quarter-finals.

Players this week were Elaine Elphinstone, Jae Bray, Heather Sullivan, Jillean Hipsey, Claire Lewis, Barbara Church and Liz Tolhurst, with a big thank you to team captain Jane Hull and all the caddies.

The ladies also played the Board Competition for the Silver Spoon medal.

Results: 1 Denise Howat nett 70, 2 Laura Whiteman nett 72, 3 Viv Locke nett 73.

This saw another well-deserved handicap reduction for Howat.

On Sunday the ladies held a Men’s Invitation, a light-hearted greensomes competition.

Result: 1 Don Edwards and Liz Tolhurst 39 pts, 2 Gordon Howat and Hilary Skeens 38 pts, 3 Barbara Church and Kevin Church 36 pts ocb The men also had a busy week starting with the Midweek Stableford with a good field of 31 players.

Result: 1 Wilf White 37 pts, 2 Anthony Baker 35 pts.

This was followed on the Saturday with a 36-hole foursomes, with 13 pairs.

After the morning session Simon Vidgen and Jamie Gold were leaders in the clubhouse with 69 nett but newcomers Warren Needham and Don Adams had a good 73 as did Dan Munro and Chris Roberts.

The afternoon proved to be more testing and the final result was a win for Simon Vidgeon and Jamie Gold with 149 nett, having only scored 80 in the afternoon.

Close behind with two steady rounds were Paul Hegarty and Brian Roche with 150.

Tony Wilkin and James Marchant came third on countback with 151, having scored an 11 on one hole. Bank holiday Monday was a Board competition for the men.

Sixty players contested the Dr Ben Light Trophy, an individual medal competition.

Exciting play on the course saw a hole-in-one on the fifth by James Marchant and an eagle on the third by Alec Miles and several good under par scores.

Results: 1 Andy Rapley nett 66 ocb, 2 Antony Swanborough nett 66, 3 Jamie Gold 67 nett.

There were four players on 69 all under par – Lewis Wilkin, Matthew Hawksworth, Tim Hull and David Elphinstone.
