IT was a busy week for the Burnham on Crouch ladies’ section.

They started the week off with a home draw to Theydon Bois in the County Bronze Shield.

At one stage Burnham appeared home and dry with three games in the bag and just needing one more win.

It was a nail-biter with two players going up the 19th, one of which also went up the 20th.

One of these was a win and captain Jane Hull breathed a sigh of relief with the team winning 4&3.

There were wins for Jae Bray, Jillean Hipsey, Liz Tolhurst and Linda Sinden.

A slightly different team were out again but playing at Belfairs Park.

This time no one went up the 19th and the team came away with a 5&2 win.

The winners were Heather Sullivan, Jillean Hipsey, Claire Lewis, Liz Tolhurst and Linda Stevens.

Forty-two ladies played in a drawn competition for the White Elephant trophy.

Result: 1 Jillean Hipsey 35pts ocb, 2 Linda Sinden 35pts, 3 Helen Ford 34pts, 4 Sue Frost 33pts ocb from Linda Stevens and Eve Corfield.

The ladies held a guest day on Saturday afternoon.

Results: 1 Elaine Elphinstone & Ann Edgson 45pts, 2 Denise Howat & Sandra Goff 43pts ocb, 3 Anne James & Pam Thornton 43pts. Nearest pin: guest on 5th: Sharon Henson-White; Member on 11th: Elaine Elphinstone.

Twenty-three men entered the over-sixties’ competition on Saturday.

The winner was Ron Netherway with 35 points from Alan Glass (33) and Martin Johnson (32).

The veterans section held their May stableford competition on Monday.

The weather was warm and sunny but obviously didn’t suit the majority of the field as most struggled with the excellent condition of the course and the steady south westerly breeze.

Two exceptions were Eddie Pittman who scored 40 points and took first place from David Taylor, who claimed second spot with 37 points.

Pittman was no doubt expecting a cut in his handicap, but the rest of the players helped reduce it further than he expected by pushing the competition standard scratch up to 72.

Sunday saw the Leslie F Wood Plate competition and unfortunately no-one at Boyce could manage even a half point – so the narrow victory at home was to no avail as they lost 7-3.

There were good wins for Tony Wilkin and Bob Morris and halves for Dean Bewers and Mel Aggus.
