AFTER the disappointments for Burnham on Crouch teams last week it was better news this week.

The ladies’ Bronze team hosted Crondon Park, one of last year’s quarter-finalists who were knocked out by Burnham, so this was a crunch match.

Burnham won 4&3 with wins from Jae Bray, Heather Sullivan, Barbara Church and Liz Tolhurst.

This was followed up at the weekend with the second round of the Hunter Foursomes, after a bye in the first round.

This competition is matchplay off half combined handicap with an adult and a junior.

Avis Greenaway (13) and Rachel Clark (31) played Warley Park’s Laura Cutler (3) and Ellisha Cox (22) and won 3&2.

The veterans’ section played their April medal competition.

The recently hollow tined and top dressed greens made putting a bit hit and miss for most but winner Dai Lester overcame this problem by successfully chipping close for tap-ins on several greens and finished nine under his handicap with a nett 61.

In second place, the only other player to beat par, was Harry Hastwell with a respectable nett 69.

As the CSS was 72, both players and the top five player in the field of 25 received handicap adjustments.

The ladies and the veterans combined together to play a friendly competition in the form of a Waltz.

Results: 1 John Merry, John Woodward, Mo Robinson and Liz Tolhurst 84 pts, 2 vice-captain Jane Hull, Club Captain Keith Lewis, Linda Sinden and Peter Hipsey 82 pts, 3 Lady captain Elaine Mason, veterans captain Barry Pressley, Gerry Sizer and Maureen Turner 80 pts.

The ladies played the Starace Salver combining scores from the weekend and Thursday.

Results: 1 Debs Wolton 35 pts, 2 Anne James 34 pts, 3 Liz Clark 33 pts ocb, 4 Claire Brown 33pts.

Burnham men hosted Boyce Hill in the second friendly of the season.

There were 12 pairs on each side and though the pairings were hand-picked by the vice-captains who they faced was drawn on the day.

Boyce is a very difficult away venue to get a result at so it is important to try and build a big lead in the home tie.

Captain and vice-captain led out of the gate winning 3&2 and past captains Ricky Blake and Kevin Church won two up but these were the only outright successes for those starting on the first.

Those starting on the tenth fared slightly better with big wins for the Gray twins Rob & Alex 5&4 and new Orsett import Ivan Milburn paired with Paul Winn, 6&4.

Late substitute Alec Miles came good alongside Dave Watson as they also won 2&1.

Burnham take a slim 7-5 lead to the away fixture in early September.

On Sunday, 60 men played the April Stableford.

Provisional results: Division one: 1 Matt Hawksworth 38pts, 2 Tony Wilkin 37 pts ocb, 3 Tom Howard 37 pts.

Division two: 1 Stan Grindley 36 pts, 2 Daniel Munro 35 pts, 3 Tim Hull, David Elphinstone, Jamie Richmond 34 pts.
