THE Ben Volta Winter League at Maldon Golf Club is reaching its conclusion.

Round 13 of 15 took place on Sunday – this week the format was a betterball medal competition played off three-quarter handicap allowance.

Glorious, spring-like conditions greeted the competitors, along with a golf course in excellent condition for the time of year.

Winning this week with nett 65 were Tony Davis and Martin Read.

Second place went to Sam Clark and Darren Mason on nett 67, with Sam Clark (hcp 2) shooting a one under par gross round of 70.

Third place went to Alan Brown and Mike Kempen nett 68 (ocb).

Fourth were Tim Hill and Ian Ladkin nett 68 (ocb) and fifth were Mark Hinton and Roy Hurren, also on nett 68.

Sam Clark capped his fine individual performance by also securing the captain’s prize for nearest-the-pin with the second shot on the par four sixth/15th hole.

Two rounds remain to be contested in this year’s winter league and only eight points separate the top four pairs.

Moreover, it is still possible for any of the top nine pairs to run out eventual winners.

The popular Saturday afternoon swindle, played in teams of three or four, with the best two scores to count, was won this week by the four-ball of Eddie Baker, Stuart Skriabin, John Meakes and Duncan Kilby with 86 points.

They were seven points ahead of second-placed Dave Newton, Ged Claydon and Glenn Mann, who scored 79.
