Maldon Golf Club's men’s section contested round ten of the Ben Volta Winter League.

This week’s format was a betterball medal, played off three-quarter handicap.

With the course still holding up remarkably well, a frosty start welcomed the competitors but a fine morning followed and some excellent scores were returned, especially by the winners.

Results: 1 Alan Buckingham and Sam Cummins nett 63, 2 Glenn Mann and John Meakes nett 67, 3 Leon Griffiths and Bill Shelley nett 68 (ocb), 4 Pete and Elliot Hawkins nett 68, 5 Ricky Todd and Nick Rushen nett 69.

The nearest-the-pin prize for the second shot to the par four sixth/15th hole went to Ian Ladkin again.

Alan Brown and Mike Kempen retained their overall lead in the league, with Ricky Todd and Nick Rushen moving up into second place.

On Saturday, Maldon hosted The Warren Golf and Country Club in the first round of the national Mail on Sunday Classic. The Maldon team of Pete Hawkins, Alan Paddon, Martyn Cook, Ed Bishop and Tony Davis contested five singles matches.

A close contest, played in excellent spirit, was won by The Warren by three matches to two.

The visiting team were most complimentary about the current condition of the Maldon course which has seen very few closure days in the recent spells of wet weather.
