ALEX Dowsett’s attempt on the UCI Hour record has suffered a serious setback.

The Movistar rider, from Cock Clarks, sustained a broken collarbone after crashing on a training ride on Tuesday.

A staement from his Movistar team said: “Pain in his right-hand shoulder forced Dowsett to be moved to a hospital nearby, where radiological examinations confirmed a fracture in his collarbone.

“The severity of Dowsett's fracture will require surgery, which he will likely undergo on Thursday.”

A media day scheduled for January 20 at London’s Lee Valley VeloPark, the venue for the record attempt which was due to take place on February 27, has been cancelled.

The statement added: “Details on whether Dowsett’s attempt will go on as planned or be postponed will be specified in the next few days, subject to medical examination after his surgery and Dowsett’s own consideration.”

Dowsett said on his Twitter feed: “Thanks for all the kind messages guys, far from ideal timing but will bounce back asap.”
