MALDON suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of champions Frinton.

They couldn’t replicate their Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one opening day win in the return fixture at Drapers Farm.

The visitors secured a nine-wicket win as they eased past Maldon’s 96 all out total, posting 100 for the loss of one wicket.

Maldon skipper Martyn Coker said: “We were missing Chris Harris, Andy Richardson, Steve Gozzett, Gary Bannister and Jody Brown, who have all been regular contributors for us this year.

“Michael Foster made his first team debut, following impressive performances for our second team this season.

“However, former Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield bowled quickly and accurately, getting the ball to seam off a good length.

“None of our batsmen gave their wickets away, but we would have to admit that Frinton’s quality was just too much for us.”

Maldon’s bowling attack couldn’t make much impression on the Frinton top order.

Coker said: “We couldn’t fault the effort of the side, but were left to rue the absence of several key players.

“This week we travel to Witham for a key game.

“Ian Elliott will be playing for the first time this season. He has been a huge part of the first team for a long period, and to have him back will definitely give everyone in the team a boost. Hopefully he can help us to get back to winning ways.”
