MALDON Cricket Club first-team skipper Martyn Coker was delighted to end his side’s losing streak.

Maldon secured a 57-run Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one victory against visiting Mildenhall at Drapers Farm.

It ended a run of six straight division one defeats and Coker was pleased to see how his side got back to winning ways.

Maldon had won the opening two fixtures of the season, including a victory against last season’s champions Frinton, but their bad run saw them slip to near the foot of the table.

Coker said: “We had our strongest side of the season out, with Jamie Glenn, Chris Harris and Toby Pugh all returning after last week’s defeat to Haverhill.

“We showed the fight that was much needed after a challenging few weeks.

“We worked hard with the bat to post a competitive score, and then defended it with accurate bowling, and committed fielding – Ross Walpole and Mark Foster were key in leading this.

“We haven’t beaten Mildenhall since 2007, so it was pleasing to end our run against them.”

Glenn began in positive manner, with 26 off 20 balls before being bowled by James Holmes.

Chris Harris continued the good work, scoring a patient 82 from 132 balls.

Andy Richardson (22) and skipper Martyn Coker (21) added support to get Maldon to 153 for four off 40 overs and they eventually finished on 191.

Jack Riley took an early wicket and Glenn struck three times early on, including removing the dangerous Ben Shepperson for 29.

Jody Brown and Toby Pugh’s bowling was key to slowing the Mildenhall batsman and Heybridge Swifts manager Brown took three for 52.

Glenn then returned to take two wickets late on, to end with figures of five for 27, as Mildenhall were all out for 134.

Coker added: “This week we play Mistley at New Road looking to take momentum from this week’s game into that encounter.”
