MALDON continued their good start to the season.
They followed up last week’s defeat of champions Frinton with another good win.
Maldon take up third postion in Marshall Hatchicks Two Counties Championship division one following a a 31-run victory against Witham at Drapers Farm.
Maldon opener Jamie Glenn set the tempo by making 65, ably supported by Jimmy Ainscough (37).
Witham’s Paul Bellehewe took three wickets to try and apply the brakes but Maldon posted a score of 189 for nine.
Leroy Facey scored 34 for Witham but spinner Tony Pugh took six for 53 from his 16 overs.
And Witham could only reach 158 for nine.
Maldon skipper Martyn Coker said: “We recorded our second win of the season.
“We worked very hard to post a competitive total and then bowled excellently early on to put Witham behind the game.
“Our overseas player, New Zealander Jamie Glenn, was again important and batted very well on a very slow pitch at Drapers Farm.
“Halfway through the innings we were in trobule at 110 for five, but Jimmy Ainscough and Steve Gozzett (24) showed great application, and led us up to a challenging total that was probably above par for the conditions.
“Gary Bannister and Jack Riley bowled economically with the new ball, giving the Witham batsmen no bad bowling to hit.
“Following this vice-captain Toby Pugh, who missed the opening game of the season, bowled well to take six wickets with his slow left- arm spin, to help restrict the scoring rate.
“Two wins from two is a great start and we will look to continue our excellent start on at Sudbury this Saturday.”
