Dramatic day for Heybridge Swifts
3:27pm Sunday 6th October 2013 in Sport
HEYBRIDGE Swifts made progress in the FA Trophy on a dramatic day for the club.
They secured a 2-1 preliminary round victory at Uxbridge on Saturday but the drama wasn’t confined to the pitch as the bus the team was travelling back on caught fire (see page ).
No-one was hurt in the incident and a replacement coach took the players and staff home.
Swifts manager Mark Hawkes said: “It was a bit of a drama, we got home a little later than we should have but no-one was injured.”
Back on the pitch and it was a late own goal that saw Swifts through to the next round.
Uxbridge created a number of chances early on.
Nicky Kabamba missed an opportunity when he was one-on-one with the keeper and Danny Julienne also missed a chance to put the home side in front.
Heybridge took advantage and scored just before half-time when Alan Green scored.
But Uxbridge were level three minutes after the break.
Craig Tompkins scored from the penalty spot after Kieran Knight had been fouled.
But Swifts made it through to the next round thanks to a Rob Fitzgerald own goal when he deflected a cross into the net.
