Maldon and Tiptree boss Spillane believes title race is wide open
3:33pm Thursday 26th September 2013 in Sport
TERRY Spillane admits the Ryman League division one north title race is wide open this season.
And the Maldon and Tiptree manager believes at least 14 teams could be battling it out to win the crown.
Maldon have made a promising start to the new campaign, having missed out on promotion in agonising fashion last season following a penalty shoot-out defeat in their play-off final against Thamesmead Town.
Spillane takes his side to early leaders VCD Athletic on Saturday and is expecting plenty of twists and turns over the coming months.
He said: “This season, I think as many as 14 teams or more than can win the title.
“It’s such a strong division and the likes of Harlow and my old club Redbridge have improved considerably since last season.
“Then there are sides like Barkingside, who beat Heybridge Swifts on Monday night. Teams really make it tough for you in this division and anybody can beat anybody at any given time.
“I think it’s a bit too early to look at the table yet and you’ll probably get a more realistic look at it in December.”
Maldon, who beat Dereham Town 2-0 last weekend face another big game this weekend at Kent-based side VCD.
Spillane said: “VCD are a bit of an unknown quantity – I think they’ve caught everyone by surprise by what they have done so far.
“It’s sometimes difficult to keep players focused on one game at a time but that’s what we’ve been trying to do this week.”
Maldon's match against visiting Witham on Tuesday night was abandoned due to fog.
