FA Cup defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for Spillane
4:37pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Sport
MALDON and Tiptree boss Terry Spillane admitted his side’s FA Cup defeat against rivals Heybridge Swifts was a “bitter pill to swallow”.
The former Stansted manager conceded that his side were second-best in Saturday’s 2-0 first qualifying round defeat at Park Drive.
However, he said the manner of the visitors’ two goals – one stemming from a disputed throw and the other from a “comical” penalty – left a nasty taste.
“I’m a bad loser but never make excuses when my sides are defeated,” he said.
“Heybridge deserved to go through on the day, but I can’t say I was happy about either of their goals.
“The first came from a throw that should have been given our way, although the eventual strike was an absolute cracker.
“And the second was a comical penalty.
“No-one appealed and I think their lad was a bit embarrassed to see the referee point to the spot.
“It really killed us off.
“Both goals were annoying to say the least and, in my opinion, the officials came up short.
“They made two errors and that was very disappointing.”
Maldon have two more home games on the horizon, against Dereham on Saturday and Witham Town next Tuesday.
