Burnham sailors perform well at Optimist Spring Championship
2:54pm Thursday 14th March 2013 in Sport
THE country’s top junior sailors were in Mersea defying the cold to compete for the title of Volvo Gill Optimist Spring Champion.
Around 140 eight-to-15 year olds took part, travelling from as far away as the Scottish Highlands, north west Wales and the Channel Islands to race on unfamiliar waters, which promised new challenges.
They sailed a qualifying series on Saturday before dividing into Gold and Silver fleets for Sunday’s racing.
And it proved a good day for two Burnham sailors, William Taylor and Ellen Morley were third and sixth in Silver Fleet, Morley finishing as second girl.
It was 15-year-old Jemma Viney, one of a strong Cardiff Bay Yacht Club contingent, who took the title, while the prize for top boy and second overall went to Milo Gill-Taylor, from Spinnaker Sailing Club, Hampshire.
The Silver Fleet was won by Matthew Beck, from the Cotswolds, with Hatty Cage, Bewl Valley SC, top girl and fourth overall.
