Whitnell comes up short in Asian qualifier

DALE Whitnell put in a brave late attempt to keep alive his hopes of gaining a place on the Asian Tour but he came up just short in Thailand.

The 24-year-old Tiptree golfer was competing at the tour’s qualifying school first stage at the Imperial Lakeview Golf Club in Cha-am and had a strong finish to his four rounds.

His 69 in the final round was Whitnell’s best score of the week, but he paid the price for a disappointing six-over par 78 on the second day to end up the wrong side of the cut.

Having also had an opening day 72 and a one-under par round of 71 on day three, the Five Lakes member finished up with a four-round total of 290 to be in a tie for 30th spot.

That gave him a two-over par total, however, only the top 15 per cent of the field could progress on to final stage qualifying and the cut-off point came at two-under par, four shots better than Whitnell’s score.
