IN this week’s Down Memory Lane we look at Tilbury Docks.
One photo, bottom right, shows an assembly of guests and officials at the ceremony of the first turf cutting on 8th July 1882.
Top left we see a aerial view of the dwellings built for the dock workers next to it the open ground to the right is where Tilbury Hospital was later built.
This is the site where Daniel Defoe’s house and gardens was before the docks came.
The picture below shows a vessel in the west dock being unloaded in 1920 using the original hydraulic crane which was built in 1886.
