BOMB disposal experts were called to a home in Westcliff after police uncovered a cache of weapons and explosives.

Officers were parked outside the home, in Hamstel Road from Wednesday evening after a 47-year-old man was arrested for several firearms offences.

Following the arrest, police officers executed a search warrant at the house and found the extensive stash of weapons, made up of guns and explosives.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “A 47-year-old man from Westcliff was arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms offences on the evening of Wednesday, February 21.

“He was arrested after a number of firearms were seized from an address in Hamstel Road, Southend.

“The military’s explosive ordnance disposal unit were also contacted to remove what was believed to be an artillery shell and deactivated mine.”

Neighbours were alarmed to see the bomb squad turn up after concerns were initially raised about the prolonged police presence.

The man, who lives next door and asked not to be named, said: “On Wednesday night, the police car was parked right outside the house and then yesterday, it was parked right on the drive.

“They were here for a long time and then suddenly the bomb disposal van was parked at the front of the house as well. I have no idea what it was there for.”

Another resident, who also wished to remain anonymous, added: “We got up at about 7.30 yesterday morning and there were two police cars and a dog unit parked outside.

“Later on, forensic officers turned up with suits and gloves going into the house with all their equipment.

“We had no idea what it was about.

“I can’t believe they had to call the bomb squad in.

“It made me nervous just seeing it there, even though I’m sure everything was under control.

“We’re used to seeing them down the seafront.

“It’s just not what you want to see in your own street.”

The man remained in custody for questioning at the time the Echo went to print.

Anyone with information should contact police immediately on 101.
