Thurrock will again be marking International Holocaust Memorial Day on Friday, 26 January at the High View Avenue Memorial Gardens in Grays.

The free event is open to all.  The service will begin at 11am and is held each year to remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and the millions of people killed in Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides.

The service will include a collective reading of the Statement of Commitment which recognises both the impact of the Holocaust, and the steps we need to take to remember and learn from the past.

The annual Holocaust Memorial Day event reminds us to condemn the evils of prejudice, discrimination and racism and to value a free, tolerant and democratic society.

Councillor Deb Huelin, responsible for Performance and Central Services, said:“International Holocaust Memorial Day actually falls on 27 January; however, we hold our annual event on a Friday – 26 January this year - as it is so well attended by local schools.

"The theme of this year’s event is The Power of Words. This day is a time for us to remember those who have survived, and ensure their stories are told. The day is an important opportunity to make sure these terrible events are not forgotten and that we have learned the lessons of the past.

“We believe the Holocaust must have a permanent place in our nation’s collective memory. We will honour the survivors still with us and affirm our shared goals of mutual understanding and justice.

“Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies are always incredibly moving and remind us all where bullying and blind discrimination on any grounds can lead us.

“We must make sure future generations understand the consequences of the Holocaust and reflect its consequences.”

All are welcome to attend the event which starts at 11am and will last approximately 45mins.
