Developers have said there is a “real desire” for work to start on an apartment complex on Southend seafront – and they hope to submit a planning application before Christmas.

Essex-based Beyond the Box Developments has consulted with residents about plans to turn The Esplanade and neighbouring Marriott’s Fish and Chip Shop into a stylish 49-apartment complex, including a high-end deli and a luxury restaurant.

During the consultation it became clear that a number of people from nearby Clifftown Parade were concerned that too many new trees were being proposed behind the building.

The residents said they wanted the poor-quality trees removed from the site, but don’t want them replaced as this would block the sea views.

James Struth, director, said: “We very much understand the concerns of our closest neighbours and we will discuss the tree planting with Southend Borough Council to see if they would accept a reduction in the new trees.

“We are equally mindful that this needs to be balanced with the council’s desire to see trees planted and the views of other people who commented that they were pleased to see the new trees introduced to the gardens.”

Other feedback received included comments from members of the Alexandra Yacht Club who are keen to see the scheme built as quickly as possible, to improve the setting of the club.

Mr Struth said that, after years of stagnation when the site was under previous ownerships, there was a real community desire for work to start swiftly.

Amended plans will be submitted to Southend Council by Christmas.
