Football fans paid their respects to a much-loved Southend politician.

Southend United held a minute silence for Sir Teddy Taylor ahead of their Saturday match against Bury.

It saw players and spectators alike pay respects to the politician.

Sir Teddy died at Southend Hospital in September surrounded by his family –Sheila, his wife of 47 years, his sons John and George and his daughter Louise.

The 80-year-old former Conservative MP for Rochford and Southend East became ill after suffering a fall in April.

He was noted for his strongly held views – he was a fierce Eurosceptic and supported the death penalty, but he was also known for his tireless support of his constituents, regardless of politics.

Tributes to Sir Teddy poured in following his death last month.

James Duddridge, the incumbent Rochford and Southend East MP, lead the tributes. He said: “Sir Teddy Taylor was a colossus of UK politics.” particularly in Glasgow and Southend. He was the benchmark of a good constituency MP.
